Twenty companies have been named Best Places to Work in S.C. for 2009 from across the state of South Carolina. The top winner in two categories, small/medium and large companies, will be announced during an event Oct. 8.

The program is sponsored by a partnership among the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Society for Human Resource Management-S.C. State Council and SC Biz News LLC, the publishers of SCBIZ magazine, the Charleston Regional Business Journal, the Columbia Regional Business Report and GSA Business.

The competition identifies and recognizes South Carolina’s best employers and is open to all S.C. organizations with at least 15 employees working in South Carolina.

Winners will be announced at an awards dinner sponsored by Nexsen Pruet LLC on Oct. 8 at the Marriott Hotel in Columbia.

Competition categories include small (15-24 employees), medium (25-249 employees) and large (250 employees or more) companies. The small category was added for the 2008 search to accommodate the growing number of small businesses in South Carolina.

Each employer filled out a questionnaire that was combined with satisfaction surveys completed by company employees. This information was analyzed and weighed against set criteria — including leadership and planning, training and development, and more — to determine a company’s ranking.

Best Companies Group, a workplace excellence consulting firm, conducted the assessment of participating companies.
