The city of Greenville has named John Castile the next city manager.
Castile will replace Jim Bourey, who was asked to resign in April after six years on the job. Castile has been with the city 15 years and has served as deputy city manager since 2006.
Mayor Knox White said the city decided to forego a national search because Castile was such a perfect fit, pointing to Castile’s understanding of the city’s emphasis on public-private partnerships.
“He’s a great implementer, a get-it-done kind of guy,” White said.
“He gives us continuity,” he added. “I can’t think of any major project in the last six years that John wasn’t a part of.”
Asked how Castile would differ from Bourey, White said Castile likely would maintain a lower public profile.
Additionally, “Castile is a wonderful leader of the staff,” White said.

Bourey, meanwhile, is joining Elliott Davis LLC, an accounting, tax, and consulting services company, as director of corporate development on July 17.
Before City Council accepted his resignation with a 6-1 vote in April, several business leaders came to his side and urged the city to consider. Per a separation agreement, Bourey and City Council members are prevented from making negative comments about each other, so it’s unclear exactly why council members lost confidence in Bourey. White and Bourey said the former city manager was no longer a good fit with the Council.
