Business community bets with Vegas

Published Feb. 4, 2011

Entering Super Bowl XLV weekend, the Green Bay Packers remain a 2.5-point favorite over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the predicted winner in this week’s GSA Daily poll. The Las Vegas favorite has won 73% of the time.

The Packers are the choice of 53.8% of GSA Daily readers, compared to 46.2% that favor the Steelers. The game will be played Feb. 6 from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff time is approximately 6:25 p.m., and will air locally on WHNS-TV.

According to the poll, 79.7% watch for championship football, while 13.9% tune in to see the commercials. Another 6.3% won’t watch the game.

Last year’s Super Bowl had 53.6 million viewers, representing 46.4% of households.

A 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl is expected to cost $2.8 million. That’s too much, according to 79.2% of survey participants. Another 19.5% said $2.8 million is about right, while 1.3% said the price isn’t high enough.

The Super Bowl is also the most gambled-on sporting event in the United States. It’s also known for wacky prop bets, such as what color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach, and how many times former Packer Brett Favre will be mentioned during the telecast.

GSA Daily asked readers how long it will take Christina Aguilera to sing the National Anthem. The majority, 65.8%, believe she will sing over one minute and 54 seconds. Another 21.1% said she will sing under that time, while 13.2% said she hit the mark exactly.

The pop star also dominated the comments made by survey takers. Here’s a selection of comments:

“Too many ‘woo-woos’ inserted in the song will cause it to go over. Sing it the way it was written!”

“Christina will stretch every single note of the National Anthem to make the song, and her time in the spotlight, last as long as humanly possible – all while waving her hand that holds the microphone wildly!”

“At least we hope she goes over. She has a better range than Barbara Streisand. Besides, she is a cool chic that sounds great. Congratulations on the choice.”

The survey had a total of 79 responses.
