More than 44,000 fans flocked to Spartanburg to watch the NFL team practice, the Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau said Thursday.

“That’s up from almost 30% from last year’s record,” said Amy Phillips, marketing and communications manager for the visitors bureau, in a news release.

Nearly 35% of attendees traveled from beyond 50 miles away, and spent almost $2 million during their visit to Spartanburg, the agency said.

“This year we had calls from as far away as California wanting to know the closest airport to fly into to see the training camp,” Phillips said.

The Panthers training camp at Wofford concluded Wednesday. Camp began July 28.

Wofford College has been the home of the Panthers training camp since the team’s inaugural season in 1995.
