South Carolina now ranks as the nation’s No. 2 producer of tires, according to Tire Business’ annual ranking of states.
In 2012, the daily production capacity in South Carolina’s tire plants totaled 84,200 units, the trade publication said.
Oklahoma was ranked No. 1 at 89,000 units of daily capacity at two plants.
South Carolina should knock off Oklahoma in the next year or two as new plants and expansions by Bridgestone, Michelin and Continental come on line.
In the past two years, manufacturers have announced the investment of about $2 billion in existing and new tire plants for South Carolina.
With the completion of the tire manufacturing facilities, the daily capacity for tire production in South Carolina should reach 120,000 units.
